In Memory of our Beloved Matriarch
Joan S. Hugus, 89, of Rushville, was received by our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 8, 2016. She was born January 14, 1927 in Woodsfield, Ohio to the late Arthur Hastings Smith and Virginia (Birney) Smith. Joan earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Ohio State University. She worked as a professional Girl Scout before marriage. She was a member of the Rushville United Methodist Church, Women’s Missionary Fellowship Group and a charter member of Farm Bureau Council 33. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell W. Hugus; and brother, Dr. Jay Birney. She is survived by her children, Ralph (Nancy) Hugus, Carl (Jill) Hugus, Aileen (Jeff) Jacobs and Nancy Ackerman; seven grandchildren; great-grandchildren; brother, Dr. Richard (Ana) Smith; sister-in-law, Norma Smith; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Joan was the matriarch of her family and loved them each dearly. She had the unique gift of making life’s events, both great and small, reasons to celebrate together as a family.
